Seeing anew with Windows Vista

Now, I don’t usually like to plug Microsoft products. God knows they’ve dominated the market long enough and earned enough of consumer dollars without needing an endorsement from little old me. Besides, I have always been a fan of Apple and its sleek designs.

Gadgets

But I’ve got to admit that the new Windows Vista is making me see the desktop in a new light. At the risk of sounding like a gushing fangirl, I love the sidebar with all its convenient widgets and the transparent windows – wow, pretty neat, I’d say. I love how I can add all sorts of gadgets at my whim and fancy, and my fave is the iTune mini player launcher, the feed headline (move over, Mozilla!), the currency converter (now that I’ve to travel) and weather forecast.

folders

Then, there’s also the way folder and file icons are displayed. Talk about being an open book! I like how the contents sort of spill out of the folder, playing peek-a-boo with the casual browser. If you pay close attention, you’ll find that applications and files open by suddenly appearing and close with a fading effect.

Oh, and did I mention that the colours and wallpapers are really something else too. Somehow the colour display seems more vibrat, truer. I’m not sure if that’s partly thanks to the screen resolution of our monitor, but we’re using only an ordinary hp monitor. I can just imagine the sharpness of the hues and shades when this is hooked up to the Samsung LCD monitor that’s currently connected to our other PC.

Come to think of it, I dunno why I resisted the upgrade when DH broached it sometime back. I’m a sucker for eye candy, and I can already see myself spending happy hours just playing around and switching the gadgets and wallpapers, and adding on more such nifty tools.

  1. Dang, I’ve been trying to keep my head in the sand about the new Windows version - every time I hear about a new program I immediately begin to feel like I’ve fallen behind. Had to happen sooner or later ;)

Those screen captures look great! So does that mean you have this on your home computer? Do you have two computers - only because you mentioned Apple?

With all the moving, renovating and house flipping I think it’ll be a while before I’m allowed to upgrade my computer again. *sigh* It was fun to be on the cutting edge while it lasted ;)

  2. Hi Cindy,

Switch soon, you won’t regret it, I promise. I’ve two PCs, no Macs although I once worked out of a Mac classic. I just admire Steve Jobs’ design sensibilities. And I love playing around on an ex-colleague’s Power Mac.
